What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose precise words that fit the subject they are explaining. They speak clearly, invite a question, and give an answer that adds useful detail.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student describing a butterfly uses words such as larva, chrysalis, and life cycle correctly. The student invites classmates to share questions and responds with a relevant fact or asks for clarification.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use broad words such as thing or stuff when they know a more exact term. They may treat audience questions as interruptions, give one-word answers, or answer a different question.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give a 30-second talk about a plant using three words from a posted word bank, then answer one classmate’s question.
