What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain a topic, text, or opinion clearly to an audience. They answer questions and address comments using details from sources, the text, or their own observations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a focused presentation, listens carefully, and responds directly to each question or comment. The student supports answers with accurate details, examples, observations, or ideas connected to the topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may answer with unrelated facts or repeat their original point without addressing the question. They may rely on vague phrases such as “I just think so” instead of citing evidence. Some students begin answering before the audience member finishes speaking.
How to Assess It
- Have each student give a 60-second opinion supported by one detail from a short text. Ask one follow-up question and check whether the response directly answers it with relevant evidence or observation.

Ways to Teach It
Students build a three-card evidence stack from an article, present one claim, then draw an audience question and answer using a card.
Use the prompt Should homework be limited, then have students write a claim, present two supports, and answer one classmate’s challenge.
Play Evidence Relay, where teams earn points by matching audience questions to relevant quotes, facts, observations, or explanations.
Stage a school board meeting where students propose a schedule change and answer parent questions using survey data.
