What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take part in extended discussions with classmates who may hold different views. They use evidence to respond respectfully, question unclear claims, and check whether conclusions are supported.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students listen closely, refer to specific evidence, and address a speaker’s actual point. They can disagree respectfully, ask focused questions, and check whether a conclusion follows from the evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat disagreement as a personal conflict or reply without evidence. They may repeat a peer’s point instead of challenging, clarifying, or checking the reasoning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a claim about a class text and a conflicting peer response. Ask them to write a tactful reply that cites evidence and asks one clarifying question.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, evidence, and response stem cards, then have students build and perform a tactful challenge, clarification, and verification.
Ask, “Was the character’s decision justified?” Students must cite one passage and respond directly to a classmate with a different view.
Play Discussion Move Bingo using squares such as cite evidence, clarify a claim, verify a conclusion, and challenge reasoning respectfully.
Review comments from a school board meeting, then rewrite one dismissive response as a tactful, evidence-based reply.
