What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely to different viewpoints and respond with relevant evidence. They address the speaker’s reasoning with tactful language and help keep the discussion focused and productive.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately paraphrase another speaker’s view before responding. They use relevant evidence, explain how it supports their reply, and disagree without attacking or dismissing others.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think tact means avoiding disagreement or simply saying, “I respect your opinion.” They may offer personal opinions as evidence or rebut a point without first representing it accurately.
How to Assess It
- In triads, ask, “Which claim in today’s text is best supported, and why?” Check whether each student paraphrases a peer, cites evidence, and responds tactfully.

Ways to Teach It
Sort claim and quotation cards from a class text, then use one matched pair to answer a partner’s opposing interpretation.
Discuss, “When does respectful disagreement improve a group decision?” and support each reply with an example from the assigned text.
Play Response Relay: paraphrase a peer’s point, add evidence, ask a tactful question, then pass the turn to another student.
Review two public comments on a local issue, then deliver an evidence-based response that acknowledges both viewpoints.
