What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely, identify another person’s main point, and respond with relevant evidence. They acknowledge differing views, ask useful questions, and disagree in respectful, precise language.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately summarize a speaker’s point before responding. They use relevant evidence, explain its connection, and challenge ideas without attacking or dismissing the speaker.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think saying “I agree” or “I disagree” counts as a complete response. They may cite unrelated evidence, misstate another speaker’s view, or confuse tact with avoiding disagreement.
How to Assess It
- Use an exit ticket asking students to summarize one classmate’s view, respond tactfully, and support the response with one specific detail from the text.

Discuss or write: Which response best addresses the author’s position, and what evidence makes that response fair and convincing?
Play Response Relay, where teams earn points for summarizing a view, citing evidence, and adding a respectful challenge or extension.
Analyze comments from a school board meeting, then rewrite one dismissive reply as a tactful, evidence-based response.
