What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely to different viewpoints and respond to the ideas actually presented. They use relevant evidence, respectful wording, and tact when agreeing, disagreeing, or adding a new point.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately summarize another person’s point before responding. They agree, challenge, or extend the idea with relevant evidence and respectful language that keeps the discussion moving.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat disagreement as a chance to win rather than understand another view. They may repeat an opinion, cite unrelated evidence, or use polite words without addressing the speaker’s actual point.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Write a three-sentence response to a classmate who disagrees with your interpretation. Acknowledge the view, respond tactfully, and cite evidence.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups claim and evidence cards to sort, then have students build respectful responses to claims they oppose.

  2. Discuss this prompt: “When does a character’s intention matter more than the result?” Require each response to reference a peer and the text.

  3. Play Response Relay, where students draw cards labeled agree, challenge, or extend and answer a classmate using specific evidence.

  4. Analyze two workplace meeting transcripts, then rewrite one dismissive reply as a tactful, evidence-based response that invites further discussion.
