What Students Need to Do

Students revise drafts so ideas are clear, logically ordered, smooth, and specific. They use feedback, then edit their own and classmates’ work for conventions and complete sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use feedback to reorganize ideas, improve sentences, and replace vague words. They independently correct grade-level errors and can explain why their changes help the reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students often think revising means fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may accept every peer suggestion, change the writer’s voice, or miss fragments and run-on sentences while proofreading.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with unclear order, vague words, and six convention errors. Ask them to improve the ideas and flow, correct the errors, and label one revision and one edit.

   Cut a rough paragraph into sentence strips, reorder the strips for clarity, add one transition, and tape the improved paragraph together.

   Compare an original paragraph with its revision, then write which change helps readers most and why.

   Run a proofreading relay where teams correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, sentence, and paragraph errors on posted passages.

   Revise a school announcement for the morning broadcast so its message is clear, concise, correctly punctuated, and easy to read aloud.
