What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students speak clearly, at an understandable pace and volume, using words that fit the topic. They tell or act out stories and retell information in order. They keep listeners involved by asking and answering relevant questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a clear, ordered retelling that stays on topic and uses accurate vocabulary. They speak loudly enough to hear, with natural expression and steady pacing. They ask or answer a relevant question and take part in storytelling or dramatics.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think speaking louder means shouting, or that good pacing means speaking quickly. They may retell every detail instead of staying focused and organized. Some ask unrelated questions or use vague words instead of topic vocabulary.
How to Assess It
- Give students three picture cards and one minute to retell the event in order using two topic words. Ask one follow-up question and note pacing, volume, and response.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three story props to arrange, then act out and retell the story using beginning, middle, and end.
Ask, “How does your voice help listeners understand a funny, scary, or exciting part?” Students demonstrate and explain their choice.
Play Vocabulary Pass, where students pass a ball and add one topic-specific sentence to a shared oral story.
Have students present a classroom weather report, using weather terms, clear pacing, an audience question, and a relevant answer.
