What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain a familiar topic with accurate words that fit the subject. They speak clearly, at a steady pace, and with expression. They invite questions and give answers that stay on topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give a brief, organized explanation using accurate words from the topic. Listeners can hear each word, and the student adjusts speed, volume, and expression. The student invites questions and answers with relevant details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use vague words such as “stuff” or “thing” instead of learned terms. They may rush, mumble, shout, or read in a flat voice. Some invite questions but give unclear or unrelated answers.
How to Assess It
- Have each student give a 30-second explanation of a recently studied topic using three subject words, then invite and answer one question. Check volume, pace, expression, and relevance.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture and vocabulary cards to match, then have them use three cards in a 30-second explanation.
Students write three key words for a class topic, then explain why each word makes their message clearer.
Play Speaker Coach: partners draw cards labeled louder, slower, or more expression, then repeat a sentence using the named change.
Role-play museum guides: students present a classroom object, invite a visitor’s question, and answer with precise words.
