What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a presentation format that fits their audience, topic, and goal. They combine claims, evidence, data, visuals, and audio from several sources into a clear oral presentation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain why a live talk, slide deck, video, or audio format fits a specific audience and purpose. The presentation makes a clear claim, connects evidence from several sources, and credits those sources. Spoken words and media support each other without needless repetition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose flashy technology without considering the audience or goal. They may list facts from several sources without connecting them. Some read slides aloud instead of using media to support their spoken ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students a chart and an interview quote about school start times. They choose slides, audio, or a live talk, then give a 60-second pitch using both sources and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups source cards with statistics, quotations, images, and audio transcripts; they arrange three into a two-minute presentation plan for a named audience.
Ask students to compare a podcast, slide deck, and live speech: Which best fits a school board proposal, and why?
Run a mode-match relay where teams pair audience-and-purpose cards with presentation formats, then defend each match in one sentence.
Have students pitch a campus improvement to the principal using one local statistic, one student quote, and one purposeful visual.
