What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine what specialized words and phrases mean within a historical, scientific, technical, or workplace text. They use context, word parts, definitions, examples, and text features. They connect those meanings to the text’s larger ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students determine the precise meaning of unfamiliar terms and support each interpretation with evidence. They explain how those terms clarify a process, claim, event, or workplace requirement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students choose an everyday meaning when the text uses a field-specific meaning. They guess from one nearby word while ignoring definitions, examples, diagrams, or word parts. They may define terms correctly but fail to connect them to the larger concept.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short workplace safety memo with two highlighted terms. Ask them to define each term, cite the strongest clue, and explain how both terms clarify the required procedure.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a lab procedure, term cards, and definition cards; students match each term and underline the evidence that proves each match.
Ask students to explain in writing how one specialized term changes their understanding of the author’s main claim.
Run a context-clue relay where teams infer highlighted terms, name the clue used, and revise after seeing the next sentence.
Use a job posting and handbook excerpt; students translate specialized phrases into plain language and explain what an applicant or employee must do.
