What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read applications carefully, follow directions, and place accurate information in the correct fields. They also identify a document’s audience, purpose, main points, and expected response, then summarize them clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students complete forms accurately, follow directions, and use appropriate details from a provided profile. They give a concise summary that identifies the document’s purpose, main ideas, audience, and any required action.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave required fields blank instead of writing “N/A,” or enter information in the wrong section. They may copy details rather than summarize the main point. They may also confuse the document’s topic with its purpose or miss a required action.
How to Assess It
- Give students a fictional applicant profile, a six-field application, and a short workplace memo. Ask them to complete the form and state the memo’s purpose, main point, and required action.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a sample job application and fictional applicant profile, then have them complete every field and flag any missing information.
Ask students to explain how the wording, layout, and audience of a workplace memo reveal its purpose.
Run a form-error hunt where teams find missing fields, misplaced details, vague summaries, and overlooked directions in sample documents.
Have students compare current applications from a local employer and college, listing the information and preparation each one requires.
