What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read application directions, identify required information, and complete forms accurately and professionally. They also identify the purpose and main ideas of workplace or technical documents and summarize them clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student completes a sample application accurately, follows directions, and uses “N/A” when needed. The student summarizes a workplace or technical document using original wording and includes its purpose and main ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave required fields blank, invent information, or use casual language. They may confuse a document’s topic with its purpose or copy sentences instead of summarizing key ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students one page of a mock application and a short employee policy. Ask them to complete the page and write a three-sentence summary of the policy’s purpose and main ideas.

Ways to Teach It
Give students a mock application to color-code required fields, optional fields, and special directions before completing it.
Ask students to explain why an employer or college requests specific information and which questions require careful wording.
Run an application error hunt where teams correct blanks, inconsistent dates, informal wording, and missed directions in a flawed sample.
Use a local job posting and employee handbook page to practice applying for the position and summarizing one workplace policy.
