What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify qualifications gained through school, work, activities, or service. They choose specific evidence and shape it for a job, college, or training audience. They adjust organization, wording, and tone for formal or informal settings.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write a focused cover letter paragraph, application response, or email that matches a specific opportunity. The writing uses relevant evidence, clear organization, and an appropriate level of formality.

Common Misconceptions

Students often name traits such as “hardworking” without giving evidence. They may list duties instead of showing results. Some think only paid jobs count, overlooking classes, projects, clubs, and service.

How to Assess It

Give students a short internship posting. Ask them to write five sentences naming one matching qualification, supporting it with a specific example, and closing in an appropriate tone.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students highlight a sample job posting, color-code requested skills, then attach sticky notes naming evidence from school, work, or service.

  2. Students compare an email to an admissions officer with a text to a peer, then rewrite one request for both audiences.

  3. Teams draw requirement and experience cards, choose the strongest match, and earn a point only after explaining the connection.

  4. Students draft a 150-word application response for a local internship or college program, using one specific experience as evidence.
