What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify words and phrases that carry specific meaning in historical, scientific, or technical texts. They explain how those terms help connect the text’s main concepts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately explain specialized words and phrases using context and text evidence. They show how key concepts connect through cause, effect, sequence, comparison, or dependence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a familiar everyday definition when the text gives a term a specialized meaning. They may list key ideas without explaining cause, contrast, sequence, or other relationships between them.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short scientific passage. Ask them to define three key terms in context, then write two sentences explaining how those terms connect the main concepts.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups term, definition, and concept cards from a short article to match, arrange, and connect with labeled arrows.
Ask students to explain how one technical term changes their understanding of two related ideas in the passage.
Play a relationship relay where teams match key terms to concepts and label each connection as cause, contrast, sequence, or dependence.
Examine a product manual or public health notice, then explain how its specialized terms connect actions, warnings, and outcomes.
