What Students Need to Do: Students choose between clear options by casting one vote. They count the votes, identify the choice with the most votes, and follow the group decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student marks or places one vote for a preferred option. The student compares totals and names the option selected by the group.
Common Misconceptions: Students may vote more than once or think their own choice should win. They may confuse the fewest votes with the most votes or expect a tie to have one winner.
How to Assess It: Give students three picture choices for a class game and have each child place one sticker vote. Ask, "Which game did our group choose, and how do you know?"

Lesson moves

Set out two read-aloud books, let each student place one cube beside a choice, then count the cubes and read the winner.
Ask, "Why might a group vote when people want different things?" and record student answers on chart paper.
Play Vote and Count with picture cards, tally marks, and repeated rounds choosing a song, movement, or classroom job.
Show a sample local election ballot and compare it with a classroom vote for the next indoor recess activity.
