What Students Need to Do: Students use a fair vote to choose among options for a group. They cast one vote, count the results, and use the winning choice to make the decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can participate in a vote, tally ballots accurately, and identify the option with the most votes. The student accepts the group’s result even when another option was preferred.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everyone must agree, the loudest group wins, or one person can vote several times. They may also confuse the option with the fewest votes for the winner.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Option A gets 8 votes, Option B gets 11, and Option C gets 5. Which option should the group choose, and why?

Lesson moves

Give each student one paper ballot to choose the class read-aloud, then count the ballots together and announce the result.
Ask students to write: Why should each person get one vote, and what should happen after the votes are counted?
Play Vote and Tally, where teams draw choice cards, cast tokens, record totals, and name the winning option.
Show a sample local election ballot and have students compare its voting steps with a classroom vote.
