What Students Need to Do: Students choose among clear options by casting and counting ballots. They follow agreed rules, report the result, and accept the group’s decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can organize a fair vote with clear choices and one ballot per person. The student counts accurately, identifies the winning option, and explains how ties will be handled.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the loudest opinion should win or that people can vote more than once. They may also confuse a majority with the option receiving the most votes.
How to Assess It: Give three class trip options and these totals: museum 11, park 9, zoo 5. Ask students to name the winner and explain how the vote decided it.

Lesson moves

Set up a secret ballot with paper slips to choose one of three five-minute class activities, then count and record the results.
Ask students to write two rules that make a classroom vote fair, then compare their rules with a partner.
Play Vote Counter Relay, where teams tally sample ballots, check totals, and identify the winning choice.
Use a mock city vote to choose which of three proposed playground improvements should receive a limited community budget.
