What Students Need to Do: Students choose between classroom options by casting one vote each. They count the votes, identify the option with the most support, and follow the group's decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can mark a private ballot, place it in a ballot box, and help make an accurate tally. The student names the winning option and accepts the result when another choice was preferred.
Common Misconceptions: Students may vote more than once, copy a friend's choice, or think the loudest side wins. They may misread tally marks, expect their choice to win, or assume a tie has a winner.
How to Assess It: Give each student one paper ballot to choose between two brain breaks. Have students tally the ballots and write which choice the class should use.

Lesson moves

Set up a ballot box and have students vote between two read-aloud books, then sort and tally the paper ballots.
Ask, "Why should each person get one vote, and what should happen after the votes are counted?"
Play Vote Counter: teams receive ballot cards, build tally charts, and earn a point for naming the correct winner.
Show a sample local election ballot and compare how community members and classmates use ballots to make a shared choice.
