K.9 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students name the United States flag and the Texas flag when shown each one. They recite both pledges with the matching flags. They cast one vote and accept the choice with the most votes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given several flag pictures, a student points to and names both target flags. The student recites each pledge with the matching flag. During a class vote, the student casts one ballot and explains that the choice with the most votes wins.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the Texas flag with other state flags. They may mix lines from the two pledges. They may think voting means their own choice must win or that they can vote several times.

How to Assess It

Show both flag cards and ask each student to name them and recite the matching pledges. Then have students vote between two books and explain how to find the winner.

   Give pairs paper shapes to assemble United States and Texas flags, then have them label each finished flag aloud.

   Ask why groups vote, then have students draw a class choice and dictate how voting makes the decision.
