What Students Need to Do: Students look at two flags and name each one correctly. They use visible clues, such as stars, stripes, colors, and patterns, to tell them apart.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given the two flags in any order, a student points to the correct one when named and says each flag's name. The student explains one accurate visual clue for each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any red, white, and blue flag the United States flag. They may confuse the single Texas star with the group of stars on the United States flag, or focus only on shared colors.
How to Assess It: Show both flags without labels and ask, “Point to the Texas flag. Point to the United States flag. Tell one clue that helped you identify each.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs small flag cards and craft sticks, then have them build and label a classroom display with one card for each flag.
Ask, “What is the same and different about these two flags?” and record student observations in a T-chart.
Play Flag Flash: reveal part of one flag, let students name it, then uncover the full image and check the clues.
Take a school flag walk, photograph each flag students find, and sort the photos into United States, Texas, or other.
