What Students Need to Do: Students say each pledge aloud from beginning to end and match it to the correct flag. They keep the words in the correct order.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student recites both pledges accurately without mixing their lines. The student begins the correct pledge when shown either flag.
Common Misconceptions: Students may blend words from the two pledges or skip unfamiliar phrases. Some confuse which pledge belongs with each flag or change the word order.
How to Assess It: Show one flag at a time and ask each student to recite its pledge. Check the choice of pledge, word accuracy, and order.

Lesson moves

Give pairs mixed sentence strips from both pledges to sort, sequence, and place beside the matching classroom flag.
Ask students to write one clue that helps them remember which words belong with each flag.
Play a missing-word game by pausing during each pledge and having students supply the next word or phrase.
Watch a short clip of a school or civic ceremony, then identify when each pledge is used and which flag is shown.
