What Students Need to Do: Students say the Pledge accurately from memory. They explain phrases such as “republic,” “indivisible,” “liberty,” and “justice” in their own words.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student recites the full Pledge without prompts and uses appropriate pacing. The student paraphrases each phrase and explains that the flag represents the nation and its shared ideals.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think allegiance is promised to the cloth flag rather than the nation it represents. They may confuse a republic with direct democracy or think liberty means having no rules.
How to Assess It: Hold a one-minute conference where each student recites the Pledge, then explains two assigned phrases in plain language.

Lesson moves

Give pairs cut-apart phrase cards to sequence, then match each phrase with a student-friendly meaning card.
Ask students to write: What promises does a person make when saying the Pledge, and which words show those promises?
Play Pledge Phrase Match, where teams pair key words with meanings and use each word in a civic example.
Show photos of a school assembly, citizenship ceremony, and government meeting, then discuss why the Pledge may be used at each event.
