What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify five familiar Texas and United States symbols. They explain what each symbol represents and sort it as a state or national symbol.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name each symbol from a picture. They give a simple explanation, such as the Liberty Bell represents freedom or the Alamo represents Texas history.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Texas flag with the United States flag or call every symbol national. They may think the Liberty Bell is still rung or that the Statue of Liberty is in Texas.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of the Texas flag, Statue of Liberty, and Alamo. Ask students to name each, label it state or national, and explain its meaning.
