What Students Need to Do: Students name reasons adults do paid work, such as earning money and helping others. They connect earnings to food, homes, clothing, and other needs or wants. They explain that workers provide goods or services.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a familiar worker and give a sensible reason for doing that work. The explanation connects work with pay, meeting needs, making something, or helping people.
Common Misconceptions: Students may say adults work only because they enjoy it, or only to earn money. They may confuse a job with any chore, hobby, or classroom task. They may assume every worker has the same reason for working.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a baker and ask, "Why might this person do this work?" Listen for earning money, meeting needs, making goods, or helping others.

Lesson moves

Give groups worker props, such as a toy stethoscope, apron, and mailbag, then have them name each worker and a reason to work.
Draw a school worker and complete the sentence, "The worker does this job because..." Then explain the drawing to a partner.
Play Worker and Reason Match using worker pictures and reason cards, such as earn money, make goods, or help others.
Send home one interview question, "Why do you work?" Students share the answer and identify whether it mentions money, needs, or helping.
