What Students Need to Do: Students follow class routines for taking turns in conversation. They listen to the speaker, wait to speak, and give a response that matches what was said.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student waits for a turn, uses the agreed signal, and responds with relevant words. The student can disagree politely and follow the routine without reminders.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think listening only means staying quiet, even if they ignore the speaker. They may call out, interrupt, or repeat an unrelated idea instead of responding to what they heard.
How to Assess It: Have partners answer, “What is one classroom activity you enjoy?” Use a checklist to note waiting, listening, and giving a related response.

Lesson moves

Use a talking stick to role-play taking turns, with each student repeating one idea the previous speaker shared.
Ask, “What can you say when you disagree?” Record student responses and practice two polite sentence starters.
Play Pass the Picture, where each child listens to one observation, repeats it, then adds a new detail.
Visit the library or cafeteria, identify the listening routines used there, and role-play one routine back in class.
