What Students Need to Do: Students listen while classmates or the teacher speak. They wait for a turn, respond to the speaker’s idea, and use respectful words and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student faces the speaker, listens without interrupting, and waits to be called on. The student answers or comments calmly and stays on topic.
Common Misconceptions: Some students think listening means staying silent while planning their own answer. Others interrupt, share an unrelated thought, or disagree using rude words or tone.
How to Assess It: Give pairs the prompt, “Which classroom book should we read next?” Use a checklist for waiting, listening, and giving an on-topic response.

Lesson moves

Pass a talking stick around a circle; only the holder speaks, and the next student summarizes before adding an idea.
Ask, “How can you show respect when you disagree?” and have students write or draw one example.
Play Respectful Response Sort with action cards; students label each action respectful or disrespectful and explain their choice.
Role-play a cafeteria conversation where students take turns ordering, listen to questions, and answer politely.
