What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how people and families are alike and different. They describe family relationships and religious traditions with respectful words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two picture profiles, students name one accurate similarity and one difference. They use details from the profiles and avoid judging either person or family.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every family has the same members or that one family type is better. They may guess a person's religion from clothing, names, or appearance.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Sam lives with his grandmother and celebrates Hanukkah. Ana lives with her parents and celebrates Christmas. Name one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards of varied families and traditions to sort by one shared feature, then have them explain their sorting rule.
Read a picture book about two families, then ask, “How are these families alike, and what is one respectful difference?”
Play Same, Different, or Both using character cards, with students choosing a label and pointing to evidence on each card.
Students interview a trusted adult about a family role or tradition, then draw one way it connects to their own experience.
