What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify economic hardship, political conflict, and social tension during Reconstruction. They explain cause and effect, then compare how these problems affected freedpeople, former Confederates, and other groups.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect specific problems, such as sharecropping, Black Codes, and racial violence, to clear effects on different groups. They support an evaluation with accurate evidence and explain why impacts differed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Reconstruction only rebuilt damaged towns or that emancipation immediately created equal rights. They may also treat sharecropping as fair employment or assume all Southerners had the same experience.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, name one economic, one political, and one social problem. Choose one and explain how it affected freedpeople and former Confederates differently.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs problem, policy, and group cards to arrange into cause-and-effect chains, then require one evidence-based explanation for each chain.
Ask students to write: Which Reconstruction problem most limited freedpeople's freedom, and why? Require evidence from two short sources.
Play a four-corner impact game with freedpeople, planters, northern migrants, and poor white farmers; students move, then defend each choice.
