What Students Need to Do: Students trace how the war ended slavery and changed citizenship and voting rights. They connect Reconstruction policies and constitutional changes to gains, resistance, and continued inequality.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can match each amendment to its main effect and give an accurate example. They can explain why legal rights expanded while many Black Americans still faced violence and unfair laws.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the war immediately created equal treatment or that Reconstruction only repaired buildings. They may also confuse the amendments or claim the 15th Amendment gave voting rights to women.
How to Assess It: Use a four-box exit ticket labeled War, 13th, 14th, and 15th. Students write one effect in each box and identify one Reconstruction challenge.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event, amendment, and effect cards to build a cause-and-effect timeline from emancipation through the end of Reconstruction.
Ask students to write: Which constitutional change most directly expanded freedom or citizenship, and what evidence supports your choice?
Play Amendment Match, with teams pairing scenario cards to the 13th, 14th, or 15th Amendment and defending each match.
Compare a Reconstruction-era voter restriction with a current voter registration form, then list what has changed and what access questions remain.
