What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps, images, and short sources to explain why an event unfolded differently because of place and technology. They connect local conditions and available systems to specific choices and outcomes. They also weigh which factor mattered most.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can locate a relevant feature or network and describe its role in an event. The explanation uses event evidence and a clear cause-and-effect chain. The student can compare two factors without claiming either guaranteed the outcome.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat geography as background instead of a force shaping decisions. They may name a river, road, or storm without explaining its effect. Some credit one factor for the whole outcome or assume modern travel and communication speeds.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map of Gettysburg showing ridges and roads. Ask: “Which feature affected one military decision, and how did it shape the battle’s outcome? Use two map details.”
