What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how natural conditions and built systems shaped the course and outcome of Texas events. They trace clear links from each factor to immediate and longer-term effects, using maps, facts, or source evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an event, a student identifies relevant physical and human factors and explains more than one effect. The explanation shows why each factor changed decisions, movement, damage, settlement, or economic activity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name a factor without explaining the link, such as saying railroads affected cattle drives but not how. They may confuse weather with climate or assume geography was the only cause of an event.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 1900 Galveston map and a short note about delayed storm warnings. Ask them to explain one effect each of weather, landform, and communication, using evidence from both sources.
