What Students Need to Do: Students discuss historical and civic questions using clear claims and relevant evidence. They listen closely, paraphrase another speaker’s point, ask useful questions, and respond respectfully to different views.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain a position, cite a source, and connect the evidence to the claim. The student can summarize an opposing view accurately and respond without insults or interruptions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat disagreement as disrespect or attack the speaker instead of the claim. They may repeat a source without explaining it, ignore other perspectives, or confuse paraphrasing with agreement.
How to Assess It: Ask pairs, “Should Texas have joined the United States in 1845?” Each student must cite one source, paraphrase the partner, and offer a respectful response.

Lesson moves

Give pairs evidence cards on Texas annexation to sort by perspective, then use two cards in a respectful two-minute exchange.
Students discuss the prompt “Texas annexation benefited everyone,” then write a claim, cite one source, paraphrase a peer, and respond.
Play Perspective Relay: teams draw a stakeholder card, state that viewpoint with evidence, then earn a point for an accurate paraphrase.
