What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to classmates, take turns, and speak clearly about a social studies issue. They explain a view with facts, ask relevant questions, and disagree respectfully.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states a position, gives a relevant reason, and responds to another viewpoint. The student can paraphrase a classmate’s idea without changing its meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat disagreement as an argument or criticize the speaker instead of the idea. They may repeat their own opinion without answering questions, using facts, or acknowledging another view.

How to Assess It

Ask, “Should our community spend money on a new park or a new library?” Students state a choice, give one reason, and respectfully answer a partner.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs community photo cards to sort by viewpoint, then have students explain one choice using evidence visible in each photo.

  2. Discuss or write: “Which classroom rule helps our community most?” Require one reason and a respectful response to another view.

  3. Play Perspective Pass, where students draw a role card and use a sentence stem to present that person’s view.

  4. Read two short letters about a local playground change, then have students identify each concern and suggest a fair compromise.
