What Students Need to Do: Students listen closely, take turns, and speak clearly about a social studies issue. They use evidence, ask relevant questions, and respond respectfully to different viewpoints.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can summarize a classmate’s view accurately before replying. They support their own claim with a fact or source and disagree without attacking the speaker.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think civil discourse means everyone must agree or that ideas cannot be challenged. They may interrupt, attack the speaker, misstate another view, or treat opinions as facts.
How to Assess It: Ask pairs to discuss whether a local historic site should be preserved. Listen for turn-taking, one evidence-based claim, and an accurate response to the partner’s view.

Lesson moves

Give groups viewpoint cards about a proposed Texas park, then have students arrange the cards and prepare one evidence-based response.
Discuss or write: How can you disagree with someone’s historical interpretation while still showing respect?
Play Response Stems, where students draw cards labeled Agree, Disagree, Clarify, or Question and respond to a social studies claim.
Read two short public comments from a city council issue, then identify respectful language, evidence, and differing community interests.
