7.20: Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired through established research methodologies from a variety of valid sources, including technology. The student is expected to:

What Students Need to Do: Students sort details from different sources into a clear outline, table, timeline, graph, or map. They use labels, legends, scales, and patterns to draw supported conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can turn data or report details into an accurate visual or outline. They can explain a pattern and point to specific evidence that supports their interpretation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy facts without grouping or ranking them. They may overlook map legends, graph scales, dates, or source labels, and they may claim causation when the source shows only a pattern.
How to Assess It: Give students a table of Texas county population data. Ask them to create a graph, label it correctly, and write one evidence-based conclusion.

Lesson moves

Give groups Texas history event cards to arrange on a timeline, then add two cause-and-effect arrows.
Ask students to compare a map and graph, then write which source better answers a given question and why.
