What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students pull key facts from written sources, data tables, maps, timelines, graphs, and charts. They arrange the facts clearly and explain patterns, relationships, or changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose an organizer that fits the information, such as a timeline for events or a chart for comparisons. They support an accurate conclusion with specific source details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy every detail instead of selecting useful information. They may misread map legends, graph scales, database headings, or timeline intervals and draw conclusions the source does not support.

How to Assess It

Give students a population table and a migration map. Ask them to create a two-column organizer and write one conclusion supported by both sources.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs twelve event cards and a blank timeline, then have them sequence the events and label two cause-and-effect links.

  2. Ask students to write which format, map, graph, chart, or timeline, best shows a region's population changes and explain why.

  3. Play Source Sort by having teams match fact cards to the correct map, chart, timeline, report, or database heading.

  4. Use a transit map and timetable to plan a trip, then organize the route, stops, travel times, and supporting source details.
