What Students Need to Do: Students sort facts into clear groups, sequences, and displays. They use source details to answer questions and identify patterns, comparisons, locations, and changes over time.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a set of facts, students can group, label, sequence, and display the information accurately. They can cite details from the display and explain a pattern, comparison, or change.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy facts without grouping them or choosing a format that fits the information. They may ignore titles, labels, legends, scales, dates, or database headings when drawing conclusions.
How to Assess It: Give students a table showing the populations of four colonies in 1700 and 1750. Ask them to make a labeled graph and write one comparison supported by numbers.

Lesson moves

Give pairs Revolution event cards, then have them build and label a tabletop timeline with string and sticky notes.
Show a migration map and chart, then ask, “What claim can both sources support, and what evidence proves it?”
Run a source-match relay where teams pair questions with the map, graph, timeline, outline, report, or database view that answers each best.
Have students use a school lunch survey spreadsheet to create a chart and write a recommendation for the cafeteria manager.
