What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort facts into clear groups, sequences, and displays. They use source details to answer questions and identify patterns, comparisons, locations, and changes over time.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a set of facts, students can group, label, sequence, and display the information accurately. They can cite details from the display and explain a pattern, comparison, or change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy facts without grouping them or choosing a format that fits the information. They may ignore titles, labels, legends, scales, dates, or database headings when drawing conclusions.

How to Assess It

Give students a table showing the populations of four colonies in 1700 and 1750. Ask them to make a labeled graph and write one comparison supported by numbers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs Revolution event cards, then have them build and label a tabletop timeline with string and sticky notes.

  2. Show a migration map and chart, then ask, “What claim can both sources support, and what evidence proves it?”

  3. Run a source-match relay where teams pair questions with the map, graph, timeline, outline, report, or database view that answers each best.

  4. Have students use a school lunch survey spreadsheet to create a chart and write a recommendation for the cafeteria manager.
