What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students match Texas leaders to their offices, major actions, and public contributions. They distinguish elected leaders from appointed leaders. They use specific actions to identify leadership qualities, including those of presidents connected to Texas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately identify the roles and contributions of the listed leaders. They explain a leadership quality such as courage, cooperation, or persistence by citing a specific decision or action.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a leader’s office with that leader’s contribution or assume every public official was elected. They may name popularity as a leadership quality without citing evidence. They may also assume every president connected to Texas was born there.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one elected leader and one appointed leader. For each, name the office, one contribution, and one leadership quality supported by an action.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs leader, office, contribution, and elected-or-appointed cards, then have them build four-card sets and defend one match with evidence.

  2. Write: Which Texas leader showed the strongest public service, and what specific action supports your choice?

  3. Play leader bingo using clues about offices, appointments, elections, presidential ties, and major contributions.

  4. Use your city website to identify one elected and one appointed leader, then compare their duties with those of historical Texas leaders.
