What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify past and current presidents, senators, and representatives. They connect each leader to an office, political party, and leadership qualities shown through specific actions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name leaders from different periods and distinguish members of the executive and legislative branches. They use evidence from decisions or actions to explain qualities such as courage, judgment, honesty, and cooperation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the president makes laws alone or that a political party is a branch of government. They may label a leader effective based on popularity rather than evidence from actions and decisions.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking students to name one past president and one current congressional leader, identify each party, and support one leadership quality with evidence.
