What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how uneven access to oil, water, fertile land, minerals, and labor shapes what places buy and sell. They trace dependence between countries and between regions within a country.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a resource map and trade data, students identify shortages and surpluses, then predict likely imports and exports. They explain how the trade makes both places dependent on others.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think trade happens only when a resource is completely absent. They may also assume dependence is one-way or that every region has similar resources.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: Country A has abundant oil but little farmland, while Country B has fertile land but no oil. Predict one trade and explain how each country becomes dependent on the other.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups uneven sets of oil, water, grain, and metal cards, then require trades to complete a production checklist.

  2. Students write how one country’s resource shortage can create both dependence and opportunity, using one example from a resource map.

  3. Run a trade prediction game where pairs study resource maps, choose likely imports and exports, and earn points for evidence-based explanations.

  4. Students check clothing and food labels, identify source regions, and connect each product to climate, land, labor, or raw materials.
