What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how foods, beliefs, languages, technologies, and customs move between cultures. They explain how that exchange changes people’s choices and larger societies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name a cultural trait, explain how it spread, and describe a specific result. They can separate effects on individuals from effects on communities or nations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat cultural diffusion as simple travel or assume that only objects spread. They may also claim every effect is positive or confuse cultural exchange with conquest.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “Choose one cultural trait that spread between societies. Explain one effect on an individual and one effect on a society.”

Ways to Teach It
Place silk, spice, number, and religion cards along a classroom Silk Road map, then label one effect of each exchange.
Write about how your daily life would change if one borrowed food, invention, word, or custom had never reached your community.
Play a diffusion chain game where teams pass cultural trait cards between regions and earn points for explaining each resulting change.
Examine a local restaurant menu and trace three foods or ingredients to their regions of origin and later cultural influence.
