What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify changes in communication, transportation, and economies that can affect culture. They explain how each factor may change language, food, clothing, work, beliefs, or traditions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a real or fictional example, students name the factor and trace its effects on cultural practices. They support the connection with specific details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume new technology always replaces older traditions. They may also name a cultural change without explaining how communication, transportation, or economic development caused it.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A town gains a train station and widespread internet access. Name both factors and explain one cultural change each could cause.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups factor and culture cards, then have them build cause-and-effect chains with string and explain each connection.

  2. Ask students to write which changes culture more, faster travel or faster communication, using two specific examples.

  3. Play a matching relay where teams pair scenario cards with communication, transportation, or economic development and defend each match.

  4. Compare local restaurant menus from two decades, then connect new foods to migration, shipping, advertising, or business growth.
