What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use maps and geographic evidence to explain why farming, mining, manufacturing, or trade develops in certain places. They also explain how landforms, routes, resources, and location shape cooperation or conflict between societies.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can connect a specific geographic feature to an economic activity and explain the link. The student can also use map evidence to predict how geography may affect trade, alliances, borders, or disputes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a feature, such as a river or mountain, without explaining its effect. They may assume resources always create wealth or that barriers only prevent contact, ignoring conflict, control, and new transportation routes.

How to Assess It

Give students a map showing mountains, a river, roads, ports, and oil fields. Ask them to choose one economic activity and one political relationship, then explain each choice with map evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs layered maps of rivers, mountains, roads, ports, and resources, then have them place farm, mine, factory, and trade cards.

  2. Ask students to write: How could control of a river help one country economically while creating tension with a neighboring country?

  3. Play a map evidence game where teams match economic activity cards and political scenario cards to the geographic feature that best explains each.

  4. Have students investigate why a local warehouse, factory, farm, or shopping center is located near particular roads, land, water, or resources.
