What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn regional data into clear sketch maps, thematic maps, graphs, and charts. They read each visual to identify patterns, compare places, and draw supported conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a suitable visual, plot data accurately, and include a title, labels, scale, and legend when needed. They explain geographic patterns using specific evidence from the visual.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat larger countries as having larger populations or economies. They may confuse totals with percentages, use uneven graph scales, or make map colors without a clear legend.
How to Assess It
- Give students a five-country population table and a blank regional map. Ask them to create one visual and write two evidence-based observations about the pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map and disease-rate table, then have them create a color-coded thematic map with a title and legend.
Display two population graphs and ask, "Which comparison is supported by the data, and what exact values prove it?"
Run a visual-matching game where students pair data tables with the correct map, graph, or chart and explain each match.
Use current trade data from three countries to create a bar graph and identify which economy depends most on one export.
