What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students study maps, graphs, and charts to find where features cluster, spread out, or form other patterns. They create questions about those patterns and answer with evidence from the source.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a focused question that can be answered from the map, graph, or chart. The student identifies a pattern and cites accurate locations, values, or symbols as evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list locations without describing the larger pattern. They may misread the key, scale, labels, or graph axes. They may also give a cause that the source does not support.

How to Assess It

Display a world population density map. Exit ticket: Write one geographic question, answer it, and cite two map details that support your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a blank world map and climate cards, then have them place cards, mark clusters, and write one question their map raises.

  2. Show a rainfall graph for two regions and ask, "What pattern do you notice, and what evidence supports your answer?"

  3. Play Pattern Detective: Teams study a map for one minute, pose a question, then trade with another team to answer.

  4. Use a map of local grocery origins so students identify which world regions supply foods and suggest reasons for the distribution.
