What Students Need to Do: Students read titles, keys, scales, labels, and units on maps, graphs, and charts. They use specific data to explain similarities and differences between places.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students select accurate values from more than one visual source. They make a clear comparison and support it with numbers, locations, or patterns from the data.
Common Misconceptions: Students may compare colors or bar heights without checking the key, scale, year, or units. They may describe two places separately instead of stating a direct similarity or difference.
How to Assess It: Give students a population map and a rainfall graph for two regions. Ask them to write one similarity and one difference, citing data from both visuals.

Lesson moves

Give pairs printed maps, graphs, and charts, then have them sort place cards by population, climate, or land use using the data.
Ask students to write: Which region would better support farming, and what two pieces of visual data support your answer?
Play Data Evidence Match by having teams pair comparison claims with the correct values from posted maps, graphs, and charts.
Show tourism data for two countries and ask students to recommend where a travel company should open an office, using two data points.
