What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ways people adjust to local conditions and change the land around them. They explain why people use labor, skills, and tools to secure food, water, shelter, and transportation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a photograph, map, or short account, students describe the human action and the need it meets. They can tell whether people adjusted their behavior, changed the environment, or did both.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think adaptation only means a physical trait in plants or animals. They may confuse human resources with natural resources or describe a change without explaining why people made it.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A riverside town builds raised houses and a levee. Explain how each action helps people meet a need.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups clay, foil, and water to model how a community might live safely near a river.
Ask students to write: “Should people change an environment to meet their needs? Use one United States example.”
Have students sort scenario cards into adapt, modify, or both, then state the basic need met in each case.
Compare older and current aerial images of your community, then identify one environmental change and the reason people made it.
