What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe how Texans respond to land, water, weather, and other local conditions. They connect choices such as building dams, roads, or shaded homes to needs, travel, and leisure.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name a Texas example, describe the environmental change or response, and explain its purpose. They can compare an example from the past with one from the present.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse adapting to an environment with physically changing it. They may also assume all environmental changes are modern or that every change has only one purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of a dam and a raised coastal house. Ask them to label each as adapting or modifying, then explain why people made that choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a Texas map and picture cards, then have them place dams, roads, farms, and raised homes where each would make sense.
Ask students to write: Why might Texans build near a river, and what changes would help them live there?
Play a matching game that pairs Texas features or projects with reasons such as water, food, travel, safety, or recreation.
Have students examine a local park, road, reservoir, or drainage ditch and explain how it helps people use or manage the environment.
