What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways people have changed Texas land and water, including farming, dams, roads, and cities. They compare the benefits and harms of these changes across different time periods.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a Texas example, a student can name the environmental change and explain one benefit and one harm. The student supports the comparison with facts from a map, image, or short source.
Common Misconceptions: Students may label every human change as entirely good or entirely bad. They may confuse natural events, such as droughts, with human actions or overlook effects that appear years later.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Compare early Texas farming with a modern reservoir. State one benefit and one environmental cost of each.”

Lesson moves

Build a foil-pan watershed, add a clay dam, pour water, and record how the dam helps people and changes habitats.
Write a response to this prompt: “Should Texas build a new reservoir?” Include one likely benefit and one likely harm.
Sort cards showing farms, railroads, dams, highways, and cities into past or present, then match each with positive and negative effects.
Study local before-and-after maps or photos, then identify one land change and explain how it helped people and affected nature.
